The Impact

As my son walked into his first day of Preschool, I was terrified. This was the first time in his short 4 years of life that I was taking him to a place where I wasn’t best friends with his teacher or caregiver. As a past teacher I knew it was time.

Time for him to be in a classroom setting, to experience social situations that he hasn’t faced yet, to get accustomed to expectations, and to get challenged academically. I knew this on a professional level, but my heart strings were pulling me in a different direction. How was I supposed to trust my child to these strangers?

As we walked in the building, hand-in-hand, he looked up at me and let go. He walked in confidently, waved goodbye, and began his school day. With tears streaming down my face, I walked out the door with the other parents- trusting these teachers, therapists, and principals to teach, care, protect, and love my child as I do.

And they did just that. The people in that building pushed my son to the next level. They saw

potential in him, they cared for him, helped him build confidence, they made him feel safe and secure, and they loved him.

If you are a mom, you know the feelings I shared as we drop off our children to school. But as therapists and providers, you see the other side. The times that you get to step in when mom walks away. You see their potential, their needs, their wants, and desires. You become a friend, advocate, teacher, protector, and what I would classify as “mom” when mom is away.
